i just think it is really sad. he is so innovative with apple. he brought the company around. >> it is sad to hear it. i hope his health is good. >> he will be there innovating as long as he can. >> reaction on the sudden resignation on steve jobs. jobs left with this statement, quote, i have always said if there ever came a day when i could no longer meet my duties and expectations as apple's ceo, i would be the first to let you know.

unfortunately that day has come. i hereby resign as cree o of -- ceo of apple. steve jobs is more than a ceo. he has been april -- apple's core. what affect will it have really on the company and the consumer? leslie brinkly has more on the story. >> it is certainly the end of an era, but not the end of apple by any means. they will continue on -- he will continue on as chairman of the board. he is not disappearing, but reinventing his role at apple. steve jobs has been on medical leave from apple since early this year after battling pancreatic cancer and a liver transplant. he has turned the world into an i-world with i-pods, iphones and ipads. >> in many ways this is apple putting down on paper what has been the reality.

>> they believe apple won't miss a beet as the -- beat as the successor takes the helm as the new ceo, a role he has tried out already. >> tim cook has been doing the day-to-day job while steve jobs was stild -- was still involved with apple. >> tim cook is not the next steve jobs. if anything he is the guy who has steve jobs' playbook and he will do what is in that playbook for the short-term. >> many see cook as more of the traditional businessman who will appeal to wall street. >> i don't see him as the kind of person who could ever have the focus and the maniacal dedication. when you look at steve jobs he is a different ind could of leader. >> consumers at the apple store were shocked by the news. >> i admire him and it is sad to hear he stepped down. >> she apple. that's big. >> they say jobs' approval rating by employees makes him the third most popular ceo of

all time after mark zuckerberg and google's eric schmidt. >> he is a beloved leader. he is iconic. he represents the heart and soul of apple. and frankly it will be very hard i think moving on. >> there has been quite an outpouring tonight of admiration of jobs both on-line and on twitter with one person commenting is that perhaps steve job stz thomas edison of our generation. in the newsroom, leslie brinkly, abc7 news. >> thanks very much. while jobs didn't say he is stepping down because of health reasons, that's the assumption. jobs was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2003 and under went surgery in 2004 to treat it. in 2008 he appeared visibly thinner. a lot of people were concerned. and a year later jobs went on a six-month medical leave. in june of 2009 apple announced that jobs received a liver transplant and returned to work. in january of this year, he began another medical leave.

he emerged briefly in march to talk about the ipad 2 and talked at a cupertino meeting. then came the resignation of the ceo of the company. the news is not going over well on wall street. in after hour trading, apple stock fell $19 a share or $18 billion in value. we have posted the resignation letter along with a number of tweets from the famous and not so famous reacting to the news at one more note on this before we move onightline will examine apple's future come coming up after this newscast. firefighter usa ban done plans for putting out the rail car fire in placer county by draining the burning propane into a ditch. they doused the flame with the release valve and opened the valve and attached a hose to it. the water being poured into the tank is pushing the vapors

tothe surface where the crews were able to reignite the fire and continue the burnoff. >> the decisive moment was when they were preparing to do the hot tab. they were able to execute them, and over here it would be less risky and be able to displace the gas and vapor in the vehicle. >> the tanker car started burning this afternoon. thousands of residents remain in the town of lincoln. >> police are investigating a major car crash that injured five people. it happened near bay shore boulevard and bacon street. two vehicles were involved. you can see the terrible wreckage. one was a mini-van with a family of three on board. the man suffered life-threatening injuries. the woman and child will be okay. two people were in the second car. one of those victims also has life-threatening injuries. the cause of the crash is under investigation. in oakland they are

backpedaling. the board is now reconsidering an offer. a change of heart that is abc7's alan wang reports came after a pressure filled meeting tonight. >> in the course of last week, he has been promoted to the interim chief of police. >> it ignited the firestorm of disawful pro. they say last january sergeant bott shot 20-year-old brown seven times and killed him while brown was siting in a parked car threatening the officer with a screwdriver. >> they have been exonerated for their actions and the legal process will determine if there needs to be some other remediation to the family. >> brown's mother is filing a lawsuit against the school district. >> what does that say about all of you? who made this decision? you don't care? >> last week he was promoted after the sar -- sergeant

abruptly retired. bott became the new interim chief. >> it seems politically stupid to do. why would you do that? why would you enrage, unless you are trying to provoke the community. >> even the uncle of oscar grant spoke. >> we are looking to bridge the gap between the community and the police officers and this is not the way to do it. >> when the chief resigned, you know, you have to move up somebody and it was a natural order of progression that you move up the highest ranking officer. >> and then to have this acting chief be a shooter, what a role model for our young people. >> the message was received loud and clear. now school board members are hoping to replace the interim police chief with a new interim police chief. reporting in oakland, alan wang, abc7 news. police are still investigating an attempted armored car heist that turned deadly.

it happened outside a wells fargo bank on fitzgerald drive. a shooting erupted between the bandits and the armored car crew. when police arrived there was a second shootout. one suspect was killed. the other escaped after being wounded. he was arrested at a nearby hospital. a pinole police officer and an armored car guard were wounded. both are expected to fully recover. well, after 24 hours without, the water is flowing again in the coastal san mateo county. the town's water pump started malfunctioning, but because of deferred maintenance there was no warning when the 30,000 gallon tank ran dry yesterday. a new pump started runing this morning after the crews worked overnight to put it in place. residents are still being urged to boil their tap water for the next 24 hours to make sure it is safe. homerun king barry bonds made a rare appearance at a giants game. the former right fielder was at the game just hours before his next court appearance.

bonds returns to the courtroom tomorrow. a judge is expected to make a decision on whether to throw out bonds' conviction on obstruction of justice charges. or grant him a new trial. if the judge decides to let the conviction stand she will likely set a sentencing date tomorrow. bonds is accused of lying to a federal grand jury investigating the steroid scandal. >> a lot more to come. up next, a big aftershock back east happening just an hour ago. the latest on that. and a plane erupts in is flames in libya. what the rebel fighters are up against. >> and the plane station is blown to bits. what happened to this rocket? and predictions of a historic hurricane approaching the east coast. all of that is coming up. and then late other "night nightline." >> coming up next, steve jobs, the wizard behind some of the hottest products the world has ever known resigns as chief of apple. we have the very latest on that.

there was a 4.5 magnitude aftershock as crews continue to assess the dwaj -- the damage from the east coast in decades. several more fractures were found on the washington monument today. in addition to the four-foot crack found yesterday, the 5.8 quake broke the cap stones at the national cathedral. damage to the cathedral is in the millions of dollars. but they say the structure is still sound. the highrise apartments have been condemned. the total damage is expected to be close to a billion dollars when all added up. scattered battles are flaring up across libya. this is the remains of burning -- two planes caught fire and exploded after being hit by shells fired by libyan leader muammar qaddafi's forces. rebels controled the airport, but were struggling to control

an area to the east. still no word at this point on where qaddafi is. a russian spacecraft launched to resupply six astronauts on the international spacestation failed to reach its orbit today and burned up in the atmosphere. it is unman edz cargo ship was carrying food and fuel to the spacestation. the accident uh consider -- occurred less than five minutes after the rocket lifted off from kazakstan. >> the report that was just given to international spacestation is that the russian flight control teams lost communications with the vehicle and that there was no final stage separation. >> the rocket's upper stage motor apparently failed. nasa says if necessary the astronaut cans last a few months on their existing supplies on board the spacestation, so there is no crisis up there yet. the protesters who disrupted the evening commute at bart's civic center station are threatening to continue the demonstrations in definitely. that's what they told the bart

board of directors at a hearing over bart's decision to shut down cell phone service during an anti-police protest two weeks ago. the bart board now plans to establish a new policy on exactly when the underground phone service could or should be cutoff in the future. >> if we are going to shut off cell phone service ever, it needs to be under the most extra ordinary circumstances. >> other board members defend chief rainy's decision during the july protests. >> you can't use your cell phone on an airplane. there are reasons why there are some restrictions. >> the demonstrators say whether bart establishes a cell phone policy has little to do with whether their protests continue. they are vowing to continue demonstrating until bart disbans its police force. a skate park under interstate 580 in emeryville is set to be demolished tomorrow. skateboarders who built the park say they tried to work with cal trans and the city to

keep it open, but they could not afford the lease money cal trans was asking for the property. city officials say they do not have the money to pay for the upkeep either. tough times. cal trans says the park was built illegally on its property, and unless the city can maintain the park, it is going to be demolished tomorrow. those full body scanners at san francisco international airport will no longer display naked images of passengers. the tsa installed new software in the scaners that will no longer show a passenger's actual image. instead the scan will show a generic image that highlights any anomalies like a weapon, but won't show body parts. the tsa installed the body scanners two years ago after authorities say a man tried, but failed to detonate a bomb hidden in his underwear aboard a transatlantic flight. well talk about the weather, the eastern seaboard from north carolina to new england is preparing for hurricane irene. the storm rocked cuba, the caribbean and the bahamas today. you are going to see some uh

amazing waves and the wind. that's when irene was a category two storm, keep in mind. it is expected to reach category four status by the time it barrels into north carolina's barrier islands on saturday. it will be packing sustained winds up to 130 miles per hour. forecasters warn that irene is on a coast hugging track on sunday. sandhya patel is tracking irene very closely. sandhya, this is a pretty serious storm. >> absolutely, dan. if you are planning to travel to the east coast for pleasure or for business, you are really going to want to listen up to this. hurricane irene is a category three right now. maximum sustained winds of 115 miles an hour. it is nearing the northwestern bahamas moving northwest at 12 miles an hour. very large hurricane. you can clearly see it here. it is a category three right now. it goes up to a category five.

watch what will happen. expects it to strengthen to a category four, dangerous by tomorrow evening, skirting the southeastern coastline and eventually expected to make landfall as a category two by saturday evening near cape hatterus, north carolina. second possibility is 5:00 p.m. sunday. this is rare. the hurricanes need the warm, moist air to keep going. once they interact with land it starts to weaken. this could well change as the computer models have this storm basically paralleling the coast. some have them going a little farther out toward the atlantic. we'll have to keep a close eye on this, and of course this is a major hurricane that we are talking about. we will keep you posted as the week goes on. here in the bay area, the temperatures came down as we expected, up to 11 degrees cool neither napa. 87 in santa rosa, down five. san francisco, that marine influence kicked in, and you

fell 10 degrees. 65 today. san jose down 9 coming in at 84. and our inland areas, 2-4 degrees and still in the low 90s and still a warm day, but the numbers are going to continue to drop. here is an indication as to why. the high definition south beach camera, you can see the marine layer deepening. the sutro tower is becoming obscured over twin peeks area as that fog started to move in. and tonight the fog has made its way up to the north bay. santa rosa is reporting gray skies right now. 50s across the north bay. san francisco, oakland. most of the rest of the bay area in the 60s right now. the fog, coast and bay, cooler days through friday. but it is going to be a little warmer as we head into the weekend. look at the water vapor imagery. an area of low pressure approaching. all of these low pressures -- low-pressure systems will merge. and then it will be a cooler pattern. a deepening marine layer and
